During this game the winningest program in the 1990's, KY Wesleyan was 13-0 with a national ranking of #1 in the nation before ending the season capturing the NCAA Div II national championship. Despite Wesleyan being made up of several NCAA Division I transfers the Central  West Virginina Cougars handed Wesleyan their first loss of the season led by newly acquired transfer Keith Bridges.
